US foreign aid contractors have started firing staff and thousands of people have been sent home as US President Trump decides to overhaul the country's foreign assistance programs – most notably USAID. The agency has around 10,000 employees and a budget of nearly $40bn, and analysts say obstructing its work could have significant geopolitical consequences for the US.
