Ceremonies took place to mark 80 years since the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Survivors said such human catastrophes must never happen again. Around 1.1 million people, most of them Jews, were killed at the camp during WWII by Nazi German forces. Auschwitz was liberated by the Soviet Red Army on the 27th of January 1945.
